Informing and empowering your executor

On Behalf of | Mar 23, 2021 | Probate & Estate Administration |

Your executor in Colorado has a number of responsibilities to make sure the distribution of your estate goes smoothly and according to your plan. When your executor feels your support, he or she may feel more confident and empowered.

Knowing how to inform and empower your executor can also give you peace of mind that he or she understands and respects your intentions and end-of-life wishes.

Pick the right person

A self-motivated, trustworthy and organized individual may automatically feel empowered to oversee your estate. Finding someone that meets these criteria requires you to take a careful look at your end-of-life wishes and your personal values. You may want to look for someone with some degree of experience managing finances or other affairs.

A good executor will have integrity and empathy. Finding someone who works well with others can give you the reassurance that he or she will treat your family members with respect after your death.

Keep your executor informed

Your executor may feel much more capable when you have taken the time to express your expectations. According to CNBC, sharing your expectations can provide an accurate idea of the breadth of responsibilities you will require. After this discussion, make sure you have a confident and reliable answer before you finalize your plan.

As you update your plan throughout the years, keep your executor informed of the changes you make. If you need to switch executors, make the changes promptly and formally. You may also consider naming a contingency executor who will overtake all responsibilities if something happens to the person you originally named in your estate plan.
